Volkswagen ID Buzz confirmed for South Africa

The retro-styled Volkswagen ID Buzz is locked in for a local market introduction in early 2027. Here’s what we know so far.

The electric Volkswagen ID Buzz has appeared on the local Volkswagen Group Africa website at the end of September 2026, confirming its arrival in SA. As a reminder, this retro-styled electric bus was revealed back in 2022 and is available in numerous configurations, with the differentiators being the number of seats and battery size. We reached out to Volkswagen Group Africa for clarity.

A representative confirmed the ID Buzz will be going on sale in South Africa in the first quarter of 2027. While powertrain and seat configurations have yet to be confirmed, the right-hand-drive UK market has the choice of 9 derivatives, including a sportier GTX model. Seat choices range from 5, 6 or 7, and battery sizes from 79 kWh to 86 kWh, and the choice between rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. There’s also a commercial version, called the ID Buzz Cargo, which was tested locally by DHL in late 2023.

Outputs vary from 210 kW/560 Nm, to the GTX’s 250 kW/560 Nm. In terms of range, the 79 kWh battery is said to offer around 400 km WLTP, while the bigger 86 kWh battery claims around 482 km.

Despite its age, it has not received a product lifecycle update, which is surprising considering how quickly new-energy technology is progressing. A substantial software update was introduced to the ID Buzz in April 2026, activating 2kW vehicle-to-load (V2L) functionality as well as VW tech like Connected Travel Assist and enhancements to the infotainment system.

Equipped with battery capacities ranging from 77 kWh (standard wheelbase) to 86/91 kWh (long wheelbase), the ID. Buzz delivers a claimed driving range between 400 km and 487 km per charge. With up to 200 kW DC fast-charging capability, the battery can charge from 10% to 80% in approximately 26 minutes.

What standard warranty and service coverage accompany Volkswagen EV models in SA?

In South Africa, new Volkswagen electric models are likely to be sold with a 3-year / 120 000 km manufacturer warranty, a 8-year / 160 000 km high-voltage battery warranty, a 12-year anti-corrosion warranty, and optional VW EasyDrive service/maintenance plan extensions.
