The Kia Sonet and Suzuki Fronx both surged back into the top 10 on the list of South Africa’s best-selling passenger vehicles for October 2026. Here are all the figures…
- Polo Vivo posts its highest total of 2026
- Suzuki Swift climbs back to second spot
- Toyota Starlet Cross cracks the top five
- Sonet and Fronx both return to top 10
- Top 10 includes six Indian-built models
- Rental sales help drive overall volume
In October 2026, South Africa’s total new-vehicle sales grew 10.4% year on year to a lofty 61 890 units, with the local new passenger-vehicle market increasing an even more robust 13.6% to 45 084 units. So, which passenger cars were top of the sales charts in Mzansi last month?
Before we list the top 10, we should point out that rental sales accounted for a considerable 21.4% (or 9 665 units) of the passenger-vehicle market’s total for October. A further 966 units were purchased by government, while 1 056 units were reported as so-called “single” registrations (vehicles the respective automakers kept for their own use).
Swift back in second behind Polo Vivo
In October, the Volkswagen Polo Vivo hit a 2026 sales high, with local registrations increasing 1.8% month on month to a whopping 2 580 units – excluding 16 examples of the Xpress-badged panel van sold in the light-commercial vehicle (LCV) segment but including 591 sales to the rental industry. The Kariega-produced hatchback thus retained first place, again ranking as one of only two SA-built models in the top 10.
Meanwhile, the Suzuki Swift – the first of as many as six Indian-sourced models in the top 10 – returned to second position in October (having ranked third in September 2026), with local sales growing 16.5% month on month to 2 344 units. A hefty 1 076 units (or 45.9% of the Swift’s total) were sold via the rental channel, helping push Suzuki Auto SA to an all-time sales record of 7 292 units.
The Chery Tiggo 4 Cross – one of two Chinese-built contenders on this list – thus fell a ranking to third, with local sales declining 14.5% month on month to 1 924 units (though it’s worth keeping in mind all examples were sold through the dealer channel, unlike the pair of models above). Note that the Tiggo 4 Pro was quietly put out to pasture locally a few months back.
Starlet Cross climbs two rankings to fifth
While the Prospecton-built Toyota Corolla Cross (down 12.3% month on month to 1 723 units, including 315 sales to government and 517 sales to rental companies) retained fourth place in October, the Toyota Starlet Cross climbed two rankings to fifth, with local sales increasing 9.0% month on month to 1 611 units. For the record, 589 of those units were reported as rental sales.
The Hyundai Grand i10 kept hold of sixth position in October 2026, despite local registrations dipping 4.2% month on month to 1 430 units (excluding 126 units of the Cargo-badged panel van registered in the LCV segment). Interestingly, only 137 units of the Indian-built Grand i10’s passenger-car total were sold to rental firms.
Sonet & Fronx back in passenger-car top 10
The GWM Haval Jolion – a range that will soon expand with the arrival of the new Jolion Max portfolio – climbed a place to seventh in October 2026, despite local sales dipping marginally (by 0.6% compared to September) to 1 343 units.
But the big news was the return to the top 10 of the Kia Sonet, which ranked eighth on the back of a 58.7% month-on-month surge to 1 317 units (excluding 4 units of the Sonet panel van registered in the LCV segment). That figure – which our records suggest is the Sonet’s all-time best in SA – included 545 sales to rental companies.
In spite of a 2.8% month-on-month dip in local sales to 1 234 units (with only 167 units sold via the rental channel), the Suzuki Ertiga climbed a spot to 9th in October. Finally, the Suzuki Fronx returned to the top 10, even though registrations slipped 5.6% month on month to 1 118 units.
For the record, models that ended October 2026 just outside the top 10 included the Toyota Vitz (1 091 units), Toyota Starlet (1 081 units), Volkswagen Polo hatch (991), Toyota Urban Cruiser (939 units) and Toyota Fortuner (894 units).
