P-Series climbs! SA’s best-selling bakkies in October 2026

In October 2026, the locally built Toyota Hilux again led the sales charge, while the GWM P-Series grabbed fourth place on the list of SA’s best-selling bakkies…

  • Hilux continues to dominate segment
  • Ranger grabs back 2nd from D-Max
  • P-Series finishes 4th ahead of Pik Up
  • Landtrek moves up to 9th position
  • Navara back in top 10 despite decline
  • Triton ends up 17th & Tasman 20th

In October 2026, sales in South Africa’s total new-vehicle market grew 10.4% year on year to 61 890 units, with the light-commercial vehicle (LCV) segment gaining a more modest 2.2% year on year to finish on 13 689 units. But what happened on the list of SA’s best- and worst-selling bakkies?

Well, local registrations of the Toyota Hilux grew 1.4% month on month to 3 820 units, which saw the Prospecton-built stalwart – which is tipped to gain a new GR-Sport variant in 2027 – retain first place in October. That furthermore saw the Hilux finish well over 1 400 units clear of its closest rival.

Ford Ranger Sport
The Ranger returned to second place in October.

After having to settle for third position in September 2026, the Ford Ranger grabbed back the runner-up spot in October, despite local registrations of the Silverton-made model falling 4.8% month on month to 2 381 units. As such, the Struandale-produced Isuzu D-Max returned to its customary third place on the back of a 35.6% month-on-month decline in sales to 1 644 units.

Meanwhile, the GWM P-Series – now also available in P500 3.0TD and P300 PHEV form – climbed a ranking to fourth place, posting its third-highest total of the year (666 units; up 28.8% compared to September) and remaining Mzansi’s most popular fully imported bakkie. The KwaZulu-Natal-assembled Mahindra Pik Up was right on its tail with 664 units (up 27.4% month on month), though ultimately fell a spot to fifth.

The Volkswagen Amarok (459 units; up 6.7% month on month), Toyota Land Cruiser 79 (384 units; down 8.4% month on month) and JAC T-Series (285 units; up 11.8% month on month and representing what we believe is this nameplate’s best effort yet in SA) held steady in October 2026, retaining sixth, seventh and eighth place, respectively.

Interestingly, the Peugeot Landtrek climbed a ranking to ninth in October, despite local registrations of this Chinese-built bakkie declining 15.5% month on month to 175 units. Finally, the Nissan Navara – local production of which ended in Rosslyn back in May 2026, when Chery took over the plant – returned to the top 10, even though local sales declined 10.3% month on month to 165 units.

Bakkies outside the top 10 in October 2026

JMC’s local distributor, Salvador Caetano, has started reporting sales figures of the Grand Avenue.

So, which bakkies didn’t make it into the top 10 last month? Well, after ranking 9th in September, the Mahindra Bolero dropped to 11th in October, ending the month on 164 units (yes, just a single registration behind the 10th-placed Navara).

The Foton Tunland (154 units) retained 12th position, while the JMC Vigus (141 units) and LDV T60 (130 units) each climbed a ranking, ending in 13th and 14th, respectively. Next came a couple more Chinese bakkies in the form of the  BYD Shark 6 (113 units) and Changan Hunter (102 units).

The Mitsubishi Triton (45 units) remained in 17th place, while the LDV Terron 9 and JMC Grand Avenue shared 18th position in October 2026, each recording 22 registrations. That saw the Kia Tasman (18 units) rank 20th, with the Jeep Gladiator (4 units) again closing out the table.
