Tips on buying new cars

Try our new car search to quickly find matches to your desired vehicle criteria, or browse our new cars for sale stock by either your preferred car brand, area, category or our top car model searches.

Please note that tips provided on buying new cars are meant only as a guide to the car buyer.

Before you fall in love with the paint colour, get the boring stuff right. Confirm exactly what's included in the price of new cars, because "from R299,900" and the actual drive-away figure are rarely the same number. Ask about on-the-road costs, delivery fees, and whether things like mats, tow bars, or a smash-and-grab kit are extras dressed up as essentials.

Check the service plan and warranty carefully. Know how many years or kilometres you're covered for, what counts as a service item versus a wear item, and where you're allowed to have the car serviced without voiding anything. A five-year plan sounds generous until you read that it caps at 60,000km and you drive 30,000km a year. Also make sure the car you're signing for is the exact spec you were shown, right down to the trim level, because features move between variants more often than you'd think.

Shopping by monthly instalment instead of total cost. A dealer can make almost any car "affordable" by stretching the finance term to 72 months or parking a big balloon payment at the end, and that's exactly how people end up owing more than the car is worth halfway through the deal.

The instalment is only one piece. What actually empties your account each month is instalment plus insurance plus fuel plus the service and tyre budget you conveniently forgot about. Among new cars, a cheaper model with thirsty running costs can quietly cost you more than a pricier one that sips fuel and holds its value. Work out the whole picture first, then go looking. Future you will be grateful.

Sort your finance before you set foot on a showroom floor. Getting pre-approved through your bank tells you your real budget and turns you into a cash buyer in the dealer's eyes, which is a much stronger position than hoping their finance desk works out in your favour. It also lets you compare the bank's interest rate against whatever the dealership offers, and those two numbers can differ by a lot.

From there it's the unglamorous but effective routine: research the model and its known quirks, compare pricing across a few dealers so you know what a fair deal looks like, and negotiate on the full deal rather than the sticker price. Because new cars in South Africa carry a fair bit of margin, extras, trade-in value, and interest rate are all fair game. Everything is negotiable until you've signed, and a little polite persistence usually pays for itself several times over.

The best deals tend to appear when the dealer has a reason to move metal. Month-end, quarter-end, and year-end all put pressure on sales targets, and a salesperson chasing a bonus is a more generous negotiating partner than one who's already hit their number. Run-out models, where a facelift or new generation is about to land, are another sweet spot, because that "old" car is often mechanically identical to the shiny new one at a meaningfully lower price.

Keep an eye out for manufacturer promotions too, like a free service plan, reduced interest rates, or cash-back offers, which come and go across the range of new cars in South Africa throughout the year. Just do the maths on what the incentive is actually worth rather than taking the headline at face value. A "free" service plan bundled into an inflated price isn't free, and a rock-bottom interest rate on a car that won't budge on price might still leave you worse off than a discount elsewhere.

Time to pressure-test the contenders against real life rather than the brochure. Compare your shortlisted new cars on the things you'll actually live with day to day: fuel consumption, boot space, ground clearance for those speed bumps and dirt roads, service and parts costs, and how well each one holds its resale value. A car that's brilliant on paper can be a poor fit the moment you try to load a pram or a month's groceries into it.

Then narrow the list by getting behind the wheel. Two cars can look nearly identical on a spec sheet and feel completely different to drive, and no amount of online research replaces sitting in the seat. Which is a convenient segue, because that's exactly what comes next.

Pre-arrange to see the new cars you've found that you think are viable options to suit your lifestyle and budget. Be careful to buy cars from a reputable source where the vehicles have been properly checked and are fully roadworthy. If you are buying privately, ensure that you meet the seller in a safe environment and be vigilant.
