You can buy a brand-new car for R3 500 a month – without a debilitating balloon

With living costs forcing South Africans to tighten their belts, buying a new car can feel like an unaffordable luxury. But if you have a budget of R3 500 a month, you might be pleasantly surprised by what the SA market offers – and without needing tricky finance schemes, either.

Fuel, electricity, food, school fees… For most households, it’s a constant struggle to do more with less. Somewhere in the middle, you still need to stay mobile. Getting behind the wheel of a brand-new car might feel like a distant dream, but it doesn’t have to be. We found five new vehicles you can finance for under R3 500 a month over 72 months, with no mandatory trade-in or looming lump sum waiting at the end.

Let’s take a look.

Which new cars cost under R3 500 a month in South Africa?

Suzuki S-Presso.

Car manufacturers often advertise temptingly low monthly instalments to get buyers through the door. What they rarely highlight upfront is the outsized deposit or the potentially crippling balloon payment due at the end of the term.

For this roundup, we purposely avoided balloon payments. Instead, we structured our calculations around a standard 10% deposit and a 72-month instalment agreement.

Interestingly, while the Renault Kwid Evolution, Suzuki S-Presso 1.0 GL, Toyota Vitz 1.0, Suzuki Celerio 1.0 GA and Tata Tiago 1.2 XM represent badge names from three different countries, they are all manufactured in the same place: India.

All five models are priced under R190 000, offer similar engine output and fuel efficiency, but vary significantly when it comes to warranty coverage and safety equipment.

Can you finance a new car over 84 months without a balloon payment?

Renault Kwid Climber
Renault Kwid.

Yes, you can – particularly if your monthly budget can’t quite squeeze in the R3 500 payment a month over six years.

However, extending your repayment term (with or without a balloon payment) locks you into debt for longer. Even though the monthly instalment looks lower on paper, you end up paying significantly more in total interest than you would on a shorter agreement.

For example, using the R178 799 Renault Kwid: extending your loan by another year to 84 months puts R433 back into your pocket each month, but costs you an extra R12 039 in total interest for the privilege.

Understanding car finance in South Africa

What is the cheapest new car in South Africa right now?

A mere R101 separates the R178 799 Renault Kwid and the R178 900 Suzuki S-Presso for the title of South Africa’s most affordable new car.

As expected at this price point, both models focus on basic comfort features and share an identical two-service aftersales plan. By contrast, the Toyota Vitz and Suzuki Celerio double that coverage to a 4-service/60 000 km plan.

One notable advantage for family buyers choosing the Suzuki S-Presso is the standard inclusion of ISOFIX rear child-seat mounts. For parents, that small detail alone could easily justify the R101 price difference.

Rent-to-own and DrivePass: Alternative routes to getting on the road

Even if a new car’s monthly payment fits your budget, qualifying for traditional bank finance is another hurdle entirely. Additionally, committing to six or seven years of debt doesn’t appeal to everyone.

Options like rent-to-own agreements or Cars.co.za’s DrivePass subscription model offer flexible alternatives:

  • Rent-to-own: Structures vary by provider, but this option generally suits buyers whose finance applications were declined by banks, while still offering a path to full vehicle ownership at the end of the contract.
  • DrivePass: A prepaid, rolling 30-day vehicle-subscription service requiring no credit checks or formal finance agreements. Comprehensive insurance, roadside assistance, and maintenance are all bundled in. While subscription payments don’t go toward owning the car, you can choose to purchase the vehicle outright down the line.

Prospective buyers on a tight budget don’t have to spend a fortune or accept a risky balloon payment to drive a new car in South Africa. And when traditional finance isn’t on the table, alternative models like rent-to-own or subscription plans keep ownership within reach.

Whichever route you choose, the best deal comes from looking beyond the headline monthly figure — make sure to calculate total ownership costs to ensure the car fits your long-term budget.
