Toyota is the market leader in new car sales in South Africa for September 2012 with a total number of 10 886 units sold. However, Volkswagen has maintained its leadership position for the ninth consecutive month in the new passenger car market in South Africa. Total Volkswagen passenger car sales for September 2012 amounted to 8 761 units sold with a total market share of 22.2%.
The top five selling cars in South Africa for September 2012 are,
1 Volkswagen Polo Vivo 3 386 units
The Volkswagen Polo Vivo has maintained its top selling position for three consecutive months and can be considered to be South Africas favourite entry-level passenger car. The Polo Vivo is available either as a hatchback or sedan with engine options including the 1.4-litre and 1.6-litre petrol engines offering between 55kW and 77kW. Various trim levels and options are available. Depending on the model, prices range from R108 300 for the 1.4-litre 2-door hatchback and R154 700 for the 1.6 Trendline sedan.
2 Toyota Hilux 2 813 units
Although not considered a passenger vehicle, the Toyota Hilux has done remarkably well in South Africa in 2012 and is currently the best selling vehicle in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) segment. The Toyota Hilux is available in three body styles namely Single Cab, Xtra Cab and Double Cab. A wide variety of engine options are available and prices range from R181 900 to R466 300 depending on the model.
3 Volkswagen Polo 2 383 units
The Volkswagen Polo has sold consistently well throughout 2012 and remains a top contender in the passenger car market. Available as either a hatchback or sedan, the Polo offers a wide range of engine options and trim levels with prices starting from R157 000 for the 1.4-litre Trendline to the top of the range Polo GTI priced at R274 900.
4 Toyota Etios 1 736 units
Since its launch in South Africa in May 2012, the Toyota Etios has experienced notable success in the passenger car market over the last few months. The Etios is a well-rounded entry level passenger car that is available as either a hatchback or sedan in two trim levels namely, Xi and Xs. Pricing for the Etios hatchback starts at R115 800 for the 1.5-litre Xi and 120 900 for the 1.5-litre Xs. The 1.5-litre Xi sedan sells for R121 800 while the 1.5-litre Xs sedan is priced at R126 600.
5 Toyota Corolla 1 587 units
The Toyota Corolla is one of the brands top selling passenger vehicles and remains a popular choice amongst new car buyers in South Africa. Customers have the choice between six ranges including the Impact Range, Professional Range, Sprinter Range, Advanced Range, Exclusive Range and Heritage Range. Prices vary depending on the model but customers can expect prices to range from R185 800 for the 1.3-litre Impact to R293 800 for the 2.0-litre Exclusive.
