Tata ‘considering’ EVs for South Africa

Indian brand Tata has confirmed it’s “definitely considering” adding fully electric vehicles to its burgeoning passenger-car portfolio in South Africa…

  • Tata EVs under consideration for SA
  • Brand dominates EV space in India
  • Currently offers 7 EVs in that market

A high-ranking executive at Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa has confirmed the Indian brand’s local division is “definitely considering” adding fully electric vehicles (EVs) to its growing passenger-car range at some point down the line.

Jeff Allison, General Manager of Marketing and Product for Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles South Africa, made the comments in response to a question from Cars.co.za on the sidelines of a recent event to introduce the Osprey.

The Tiago EV is Tata’s most affordable battery electric vehicle in India.

“We’re seeing exponential growth [in sales of] new-energy vehicles in South Africa – it has to be said, off a very low base. But the market acceptance is starting to increase. What gives us a unique position in South Africa is [that for] every internal-combustion engine car in our range, there’s an EV equivalent available for us,” Allison said.

“So, from the beginning of the range to the end of the range – whether we’re talking Styzor [known in India as the Sierra], whether we’re talking Osprey [badged as the Nexon in India], whether we’re talking Tiago – there is an EV available in the Indian domestic market,” he added, making reference to Tata’s dominance of the EV segment in the world’s most populous nation.

The Sierra (coming to SA as the Styzor) is available in India in electric guise.

“This is a really exciting value proposition for us. Why? Because it allows us to be nimble – we don’t need research and market development over years and years and years. We have a product line-up that – if the demand is there – [will allow us to follow] a journey, particularly in the EV space,” Allison told us, adding that “it’s definitely something that we’re considering down the line”.

In India, Tata’s range of battery-powered passenger vehicles currently includes EV versions of as many as 7 nameplates: the Tigor sedan, Tiago hatchback, Punch, Nexon (aka Osprey), Curvv, Harrier and Sierra (coming to SA as the Styzor).

A look at the Indian market’s battery-powered version of the Punch.

According to Autocar Professional, Tata’s EV sales in India reached a new high of 16 549 units in August 2026, translating to 25% of the brand’s overall passenger-vehicle figure for the month and a hefty 43.8% share of the country’s total EV market.
