The Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo is based on the V-Class but caters for those who spend their time in the great outdoors. This modified Marco Polo Horizon has a few tricks up its sleeve thanks to some modifications from Hartmann.
South Africans love the outdoors and it’s a pity that the Mercedes-Benz Marco Polo is not offered locally. But then again, it’s a niche vehicle and even if it was offered in Mzansi, we suspect very few people would be willing and able to fork out roughly R1.5-million or more for a luxury camper van.
The Marco Polo Horizon you see here has been modified by Harmann with what the firm calls a VP Gravity upgrade to make it more effective at being your best outdoor companion. Hartmann used the V250d as a starting point, which is powered by a 2.0-litre turbodiesel engine with 140 kW and 440 Nm of torque.
In an effort to enhance the practicality of the Marco Polo, Hartmann installed a rear storage system with 2 drawers measuring 117 cm long, each with a 100 kg load capacity. More so, 3 aluminium storage boxes are also fitted and these can also be used as a table if need be and can each store up to 12 litres of water. This nifty kitchen is perfect for weekend camping with the family.
Furthermore, ground clearance has been raised by 30 mm and this vehicle rides on 19-inch wheels finished in matte silver and black while the additional plastic body cladding further protects the vehicle as you go in search of your ideal campsite.
Other useful features include the pop-up roof tent and foldable mattress which means you don’t have to pitch a tent.
