Jaecoo J5 1.5T SHS HEV (2026) Price & Specs

The new Jaecoo J5 1.5T SHS HEV has touched down in South Africa as one of the local market’s most affordable traditional hybrids. Here’s what the newcomer costs…

  • HEV derivative joins Jaecoo J5 range
  • 4th most affordable HEV in Mzansi
  • Peak outputs of 165 kW & 295 Nm

The Jaecoo J5 1.5T SHS HEV crossover has officially launched in South Africa, arriving as one of the local market’s most affordable traditional hybrids.

As a reminder, the local J5 range already includes a quartet of purely petrol-powered derivatives (priced from R339 900 to R479 900) along with a recently detailed battery-electric vehicle (BEV) variant pegged at R549 900. The new J5 HEV, meanwhile, is priced at R459 900.

That sees it launch as Mzansi’s 4th most affordable traditional hybrid electric vehicle (HEV). Interestingly, the J5 1.5T SHS HEV slots in some R20 000 below the closely related Omoda C5 1.5T SHS HEV (which is currently priced from R479 900).

Like its Omoda sibling, the new HEV-badged J5 pairs a turbocharged 1.5-litre, 4-cylinder petrol engine with an electric motor and a 1.83 kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering combined outputs of 165 kW and 295 Nm to the front wheels.

According to Omoda & Jaecoo South Africa, the newcomer’s consumption is 5.3 L/100 km. Featuring a 51-litre fuel tank, the J5 SHS is thus theoretically capable of covering up to 980 km on a single tank.

Standard equipment includes 18-inch alloy wheels, a panoramic moonroof, automatic LED headlamps, leather upholstery, a 6-way electrically adjustable driver’s seat, multi-colour ambient lighting, dual-zone climate control, a power-operated sunshade, an 8.0-inch instrument cluster, a 13.2-inch touchscreen, a 6-speaker sound system, 50-watt wireless smartphone charging, a reverse-view camera and rear parking sensors.

The list of standard safety kit, meanwhile, includes 6 airbags, electronic stability control, traction control, brake assist, ISOfix child-seat anchors and a raft of advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) functions, from adaptive cruise control and automatic emergency braking to lane-keep assist and an intelligent evasion system.

As a reminder, Omoda & Jaecoo announced in early July 2026 that its Jaecoo J5 would “form part of the core production line-up” at the Chery Group’s newly acquired manufacturing plant in Rosslyn, Gauteng. Interestingly, the sub-brand added that the J5 would be produced locally in both internal combustion engine (ICE) form and new-energy vehicle (NEV) guise.
