How well is GAC selling in SA? Sales figures revealed

How well is GAC Motor selling in South Africa? Well, the Chinese brand’s local distributor finally started reporting sales figures in July 2026. Here are the numbers…

  • GAC’s importer now reporting sales to Naamsa
  • Chinese brand reached triple figures in July 2026
  • GS3 Emzoom was marque’s most popular model

Wondering how well Chinese brand GAC Motor is selling in South Africa? Well, Salvador Caetano Auto SA – the company responsible for importing and distributing the marque in Mzansi – has finally started reporting sales figures to industry-representative body Naamsa.

As a reminder, GAC officially arrived in South Africa back in August 2024, kicking off its local operations with the launch of the GS3 Emzoom and adding the Emkoo soon thereafter. The M8 (not to be confused with the now-out-of-production BMW of the same name), meanwhile, touched down in November 2025.

According to figures reported to Naamsa, GAC Motor registered 103 units in South Africa in July 2026, with all sales coming via the dealer channel. The GS3 Emzoom crossover range – which is 7 derivatives strong and priced from R359 900 – led the charge for GAC, with 69 units registered last month.

The larger Emkoo crossover – which is marketed from R449 900, with 3 variants offered – managed a total of 25 units in July, while the plug-in hybrid M8 MPV (the single derivative offered in SA is priced at R1 499 900) made up the balance on 9 units.

Salvador Caetano Auto SA also imports and distributes China’s JMC brand. Last month, some 105 units of the Vigus were registered locally, seeing this model rank 14th on the list of SA’s best-selling bakkies. According to Naamsa, 25 units of the JMC Carrying Plus were also registered in the medium-commercial vehicle segment.

As such, Salvador Caetano Auto SA effectively sold 233 units in total in July 2026, seeing it rank 25th on the list of top-selling automakers in Mzansi. The company thus slotted in just behind Jaguar Land Rover but ahead of the likes of Honda and Mazda.
