Description
The 2019 VW Polo (often referred to as the Polo 6 or Polo 8 in local markets) 1.0 TSI Trendline Manual is a highly capable, premium-feeling entry-level hatchback. It balances excellent fuel economy, advanced standard safety tech, and impressive cabin space, making it one of South Africa's most sought-after everyday cars. While it lacks the alloy wheels and flashy trim of the Comfortline or Highline, it delivers the exact same solid German build quality and refined road manners.
Engine & Driving Performance
• Surprising Pep: The 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbocharged engine produces 70 kW and 175 Nm of torque. Though it suffers from minor initial turbo lag, it pulls hard once moving and feels much more powerful than its numbers suggest.
• Engaging Manual Box: The 5-speed manual transmission is crisp and easy to slot, giving you total control over the turbo's power band.
• Ride and Handling: Thanks to its wider and lower platform, it feels highly agile and planted around corners. The suspension leans towards the stiffer side but remains comfortable over most road imperfections.
• Fuel Efficiency: It is incredibly light on petrol, easily returning around 4.4 to 4.6 L/100 km on the highway if driven smoothly.
Interior & Standard Features
Despite being the entry-level "Trendline" model, Volkswagen packed this variant with excellent baseline technology:
• Infotainment: It features a crisp 8-inch Composition Colour touchscreen that includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard.
• Materials: The layout is highly functional and clear, though you will notice tougher, harsher cloth upholstery and more hard plastics compared to higher tiers.
• Cabin & Boot Space: It provides excellent legroom for taller drivers. The 351-litre boot is highly competitive for its class—nearly matching the larger Golf—and features split-folding rear seats.
• Missing Conveniences: As a budget-conscious spec, it rides on 15-inch steel wheels with hubcaps instead of alloys and lacks standard rear electric windows or a front center armrest
