Description
1971 Fiat 850 Special
A wonderfully preserved and highly original example of the charming Fiat 850 Special.
These cars very seldom come onto the market in this condition and with this level of originality.
While so many surviving examples have been restored, stripped and reassembled over the years, this car has remained remarkably untouched.
Cosmetically, the car received a blow-over many years ago but otherwise presents extremely well. The chrome remains bright, the panel fit and door gaps are excellent, and the overall appearance reflects a car that has clearly been well preserved throughout its life.
The same story continues inside.
The interior remains highly original and has survived remarkably well more than 50 years after the car first rolled off the production line. Even the original headlining remains in place and, while it could benefit from a good clean, we would much rather see this preserved than unnecessarily replaced.
Mechanically, she runs well and feels lively on the road. The manual gearbox shifts easily, the brakes operate as they should, and the engine bay presents very well.
The car also comes with its owner's manual, a lovely addition to an already very original example.
Very few genuinely good, largely unrestored Fiat 850 Specials remain today.
This is not a car that has been restored to look old; it is a car that has simply been preserved, and that is a large part of its appeal.
A truly lovely example of a great little Italian classic, ready for its next custodian to enjoy and preserve.
Viewing at Basseille Classics in Edenvale, Johannesburg, strictly by appointment.
