Description
The early years of many classic cars in South Africa are shrouded in the mists of time. This charming Austin Healey Sprite is no exception. While it is registered as "used" and correctly dated, the AN5 series Chassis Number has been lost. It appears to have had two previous owners going back to East London in the 1960's followed by a move to the Transvaal in the late 1970's.
The Sprite was restored by Alec Saunders of Classic & Sports Cars in the late 1990's. In 2014 it was acquired through Alec by its current owner where it became a member of his comprehensive Healey Collection.
The Sprite starts and runs very well. The braking, cooling and fueling systems have all been restored, as have the starter motor, dynamo and regulator. The paintwork has been refurbished and detailed. The heavy bonnet has received a gas strut conversion and subtle locking mechanisms have been installed. The car wears a new set of tyres.
The Austin Healey Sprite, or "Frogeye" as it is affectionately known, is a feisty, fun and affordable sports car. Almost 50 000 were produced, the majority in LHD format for the USA market.
Caution: A classic car is not a daily driver. They do not have the passenger and system safety characteristics of modern vehicles.
