The monthly repayment of R3 000 is calculated over 72 months with no deposit, no residual and the interest rate set at 10%.

The cars on this list are ordered from the cheapest to the most expensive and prices are correct as of September 2019.

1. Mahindra KUV100 NXT K2+ – From R137 999

Mahindra has updated its KUV100 NXT range in South Africa. There is a new entry-level derivative, named the K2+, which costs R137 999 and is powered by a 1.2-litre, 3-cylinder petrol engine with 61 kW and 115 Nm of torque and mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. With the new entry-level version, Mahindra is clearly targeting high-volume cars such as the Renault Kwid and Datsun Go but the Indian firm offers good safety specification, for which they deserve a round of applause. 

Monthly repayments for the Mahindra KUV100 NXT K2+ is estimated at R2 557 over 72 months.

2. Suzuki Celerio 1.0 GA / GL – From R141 400

The former Cars.co.za Consumer Awards – powered by WesBank budget car category winner is a great choice in this segment and the facelifted version is more attractive than before. It's powered by a 1.0-litre petrol engine with 50 kW and 90 Nm of torque mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. The Celerio's biggest drawcard is its space offering with a sizable load bay (with a claimed capacity of 235 litres), which expands to 1 034 litres with the rear seatback folded flat. The Celerio GA is sparsely specced, but the GL derivative represents good value in this segment.

If you opt for the base Celerio GA, your monthly repayment over 72 months will be approximately R2 620. If you choose the higher-spec Celerio GL, your monthly instalment comes in at roughly R2 934 over 72 months.

3. BAIC D20 1.3 Comfort – From R149 990

The untested, Chinese-built BAIC D20 arrived in South Africa in 2017 and this particular derivative is powered by a naturally aspirated 1.3-litre petrol engine with 75 kW and 128 Nm of torque. A 5-speed manual transmission is standard.

4. Datsun Go 1.2 Mid - R154 500

The Datsun Go was updated and now has improved safety with ABS and 2 front airbags. The Go is powered by a 3-cylinder, 1.2-litre petrol engine with 50 kW and 104 Nm of torque and the base spec Go 1.2 Mid is priced at R154 500, which translates into an estimated monthly payment of R2 862 over 72 months.

5. Tata Bolt 1.2T XMS – From R159 995

The vastly-improved Tata Bolt came to market in 2015 and it has sold relatively well ever since. Its 1.2-litre turbocharged engine offers a respectable 66 kW and 140 Nm of torque and is mated with a 5-speed manual transmission. Key features for this base-spec derivative include electric windows all round, Bluetooth connectivity, a multifunction steering wheel and a USB port to charge devices. 

Monthly repayments for the Tata Bolt 1.2T XMS over 72 months is estimated at R2 964.
