Two years have passed since the Jaecoo J7 touched down in our market. In the face of fresher competition and rising fuel costs, which derivative is the best fit for your daily driving needs?
It feels like there’s a never-ending launch schedule for new brands and their wares, and hardly a month passes without a newcomer making landfall. The Jaecoo brand officially touched down in South Africa in April 2024 with its first model, the J7. The J5 followed in 2025 and the powertrain offering was expanded to include new-energy options.
Dare we say it, but could Jaecoo (and sister brand Omoda) be seen as the old guard in the face of newer brands and fresher offerings? The sales figures tell a good story, both locally and internationally. The J7 is one of the United Kingdom’s best-selling vehicles and regularly takes a podium spot. Closer to home, Jaecoo SA says over 836 J7 units were sold between January and July 2026.

| J7 1.6T Glacier | R579 900 |
| J7 1.6T Inferno | R679 900 |

The J7 is sold with a 5-year / 150 000 km factory warranty, 10-year / 1 million km engine warranty and there’s a 5-year / 70 000 km service plan. The plug-in hybrid SHS gets a 7-year / 200 000 km factory warranty, 10-year / 1 million km engine warranty, plus 10-years / unlimited km battery pack warranty for the first owner.
The verdict
At the current pricing, the Jaecoo J7 makes a solid case for itself and with the Chery Group cementing its foothold in South Africa with local manufacturing operations, there’s further assurance the brand won’t be packing up any time soon.
The conundrum is whether you pay more for the SHS and enjoy the lower running costs, with some quick calculations suggesting to offset the R110 000 price differences will take a few years. That said, the additional performance should help sweeten the deal!
As we’ve said in our assessments of the J7 range, particularly the PHEV: “The J7 PHEV marks a new era for Chinese car brands in South Africa, proving that value no longer means compromises on quality, technology, or driving pleasure.”
