In July 2026, South Africa’s total new-vehicle sales increased 11.9% year on year to 57 708 units, with the local passenger-vehicle market growing 12.5% to 40 912 units – its highest level since September 2014, according to Naamsa. So, which passenger cars led the sales charge in Mzansi last month?

Well, before we examine the top 10, it’s worth keeping in mind rental sales accounted for a hefty 13.8% (or 5 651 units) of the passenger-vehicle market’s total in July. A further 598 units were sold to government, while 859 units were reported as so-called “single” registrations (vehicles the respective brands kept for their own use).

Vivo and Tiggo 4 sales rise; Swift back on podium

The Volkswagen Polo Vivo retained the title of SA’s best-selling passenger car in July 2026, with local registrations increasing 5.6% month on month to 2 503 units – the Kariega-built hatchback’s best effort since November 2025. Note this figure includes 675 units sold through the rental channel but excludes 10 units of the Xpress panel-van that were registered in the light-commercial vehicle space.

Despite posting its best-ever sales figures in South Africa, the Chery Tiggo 4 – which, as a reminder, includes both the Tiggo 4 Pro and the Tiggo Cross – again had to settle for the runner-up position. In July 2026, local sales of the Chinese crossover increased 1.9% compared to June 2026 to reach 2 110 units (including 156 units sold to rental-fleet buyers).

Meanwhile, the Suzuki Swift returned to the passenger-car podium last month, climbing from 5th to 3rd. Registrations of the Indian-built hatch surged 38.0% compared to June, reaching a total of 1 916 units (the nameplate’s best showing since February 2026). Much of that growth was thanks to the Swift’s performance in the rental segment, where as many as 671 units were registered.

Corolla Cross and Starlet climb as Grand i10 falls

Meanwhile, the Toyota Corolla Cross climbed 2 rankings to enter the top 5 for only the 2nd time this year (after March 2026, when it placed on the podium), with sales growing 19.9% month on month to a 2026 high of 1 626 units. The latter figure includes 247 sales via the rental channel.

Local registrations of the Hyundai Grand i10 dropped marginally – just 0.5% month on month – to 1 482 units (excluding 69 units of the Cargo-badged panel van registered in the LCV segment but including 135 rental sales), though this was enough to see the nameplate fall 2 places to 5th.

The Toyota Starlet jumped 4 rankings to 6th in July, with local sales surging 50.1% month on month to 1 453 units – the hatchback’s highest tally since December 2025. As many as 647 units (or 44.5% of its total) represented sales via the rental channel, while 164 units were purchased by government.

Jolion slips 4 rankings and Urban Cruiser drops 3

Posting its best sales of 2026 thus far, the Suzuki Fronx (1 185 units; up 8.5% month on month) climbed 2 spots to 7th, while the GWM Haval Jolion – suffering a 20.5% month-on-month decline in sales to 1 132 units, though admittedly off its record showing in June – slipped 4 rankings to 8th.

Meanwhile, the Suzuki Ertiga (1 085 units; down 5.7% month on month) fell a spot to 9th in July 2026, with the Toyota Urban Cruiser – which experienced a 17.5% month-on-month fall in local registrations to end on 968 units – slipping 3 places to 10th.

For the record, models that were bubbling under the top 10 in July 2026 included the Toyota Vitz (955 units), Jetour T2 (925 units), Omoda C5 (889 units), Kia Sonet (821 units) and Toyota Starlet Cross (803 units).
