New Ford Bronco to come to SA?

The new Ford Bronco Basecamp has been revealed and locked in for Australia, giving us hope that one day this iconic name will make its way to SA.

The new Ford Bronco Basecamp is a 5-seater all-wheel-drive family SUV. Previously never offered in right-hand drive, the newcomer is already confirmed for launch in Australia and New Zealand in mid-2027, giving South Africans hope that it will eventually launch here.

This Ford Bronco is not sourced from the United States, but is rather a collaborative effort between Ford and its joint-venture partner JMC. Given the market trend of pivoting towards new-energy vehicles, it should come as no surprise that this new Bronco is electrified.

While Ford officially has yet to confirm all the technical details, the powertrain is a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine with two electric motors in a range-extender electric-vehicle configuration. The battery has 49 kWh of capacity, 180 km of overall range but thanks to its onboard generator, Ford reckons a combined distance of up to 900 km is possible. The powertrain supports 6.6 kW vehicle-to-load output, meaning you can run your coffee machines and induction stovetops when you’re out adventuring.

From the press materials, its clear Ford is targeting the outdoor enthusiasts with its new Bronco. Features like the ability to fold down all the seats and sleep on an inflatable mattress, opening the roof for some stargazing and there’s even an integrated rear door table.

This is not Ford’s first collaborative effort either as the current iteration of Ford Territory is sourced from China. Given the lack of a family off-roading SUV positioned under the 7-seater, ladder-frame Everest, we think its highly likely that the new Ford Bronco will make its way to South Africa.
