The Kia Carens range has been expanded to include a more affordable, petrol-powered derivative. Here’s how much you can expect to pay.
The new Kia Carens 1.5 LS lowers the range starting point by R40 000 and is priced at a smidge under R360 000. The key differentiator between this new entry-level model can be found under the bonnet. The 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine is naturally aspirated and makes 84 kW and 144 Nm. In comparison, the turbocharged diesel engine makes 85 kW and 250 Nm.
You’d think there’d be a large performance and efficiency discrepancy, but the newer petrol-powered Carens is said to hit 100 kph in 11.1 seconds, fractionally quicker than the diesel’s 12 seconds. In terms of economy, the petrol has a claimed figure of 7.2 L/100 km and a fuel tank range of 625 km (5L/100 km and 900 km).
The petrol-powered Kia Carens is only available in LS trim, which comes with 16-inch wheels, partial LED rear combination lamps on the exterior. Inside, there’s a height-adjustable driver’s seat with combination cloth and artificial leather upholstery.
When it comes to tech and connectivity, the Carens comes with an 8-inch infotainment display, 4.2-inch TFT LCD cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto. It also features rear park distance control, anti-lock brakes, electronic stability control, hill start assist as well as 6 airbags.
