The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV is AMG’s first purpose-built performance SUV, packing both incredible performance figures and EV charging technology.
- The 2nd model on the brand’s new AMG.EA electric performance platform
- Three derivatives: GT53 SUV, GT55 SUV and GT63 SUV
- Not confirmed for South Africa at this stage
The Mercedes-AMG GT SUV has broken loose from its camouflage and the all-electric powertrain offers eye-widening outputs. There’ll be a choice of three electric engines and even the ‘entry-level’ derivative offers impressive performance.
It’s a sharp-looking SUV, adopting the latest design elements from the current high-end AMG offerings and while it doesn’t have any internal-combustion power, we’re going to assume this is AMG’s answer to the BMW XM, M’s first performance SUV.
The headline act is the flagship GT63 which features three electric motors. Interestingly, the technical release refers to a term called ‘continuous power’ which implies that the powertrain is capable of summoning far larger figures in its most aggressive mode.
Powertrain and Performance
With 530 kW in its default setting, you’d think that’d be more than enough but in its most dynamic performance setting, an output of 860 kW is possible. There’s also 2000 Nm on tap. This gives the vehicle the ability to accelerate to 100 kph in just 2.7 seconds.
Next up is the GT55 which also has a three-motor setup and outputs of 530 kW and 1 860 Nm, but again, in its sportiest setting, it puts out 600 kW. It can complete 0-100 kph in 3.1 seconds. Finally, the GT53 goes down to two electric motors and makes 270 kW and 800 Nm, but can produce 400 kW. It is still brisk, with a 0-100 kph in just 4.2 seconds. AMG is well aware that its fanbase craves a great soundtrack and has fitted the car with speakers which replicate the iconic V8 engines.
The range is assembled on 800 Volt architecture and there are two battery sizes available. The entry-level model has a 106 kWh battery that can support 600 kW DC charging and has a range claim of between 597 and 668 km.
The higher-spec models have a 128 kWh battery that can charge even faster at 710 kW and it has a range of 620 and 700 km. Interestingly, AMG seems to have done a fair job on the weight management and the GT SUV with the largest battery has a kerb weight of 2 695 kg.
It’s not just a straight-line specialist either and the vehicle features active aerodynamics, trick suspension with pitch + roll stabilisation, rear axle steer and the option of ceramic brakes.
Interior and Tech
The cabin is driver-focused and there’s a massive focus on digital and technology. The vehicle features the latest version of the MBUX infotainment software and AMG says there’s AI integration as well as real-time performance data. Even if you don’t use all the features, there’s no denying this is an interestingly-themed cockpit.
Coming to South Africa?
At this stage there was no confirmation that this high-tech and performance-focused AMG SUV has been allocated for our market. The vehicle is assembled at Mercedes-Benz plant Sindelfingen, Germany.
