The Twitter Blanket Drive happened on the 26th of May, with a number of meet-ups around South Africa. Cars.co.za was proud to host the Kensington meet-up and it was a massive success, exceeding all expectations.
So what went down?
The event kicked off at 6pm but even before then there were a large number of people who had already dropped off blankets or had got to the event early. We decided that our mission for the night was to fill 2 Chevrolet Corsa Utilitys with blankets, no mean feat as you can pile a lot of blankets on these bakkies.
More and more people begun to arrive and we started to load the blankets onto the bakkies. With free coffee available, free fudge and a free Cars.co.za mug to anyone who donated a blanket, the place was buzzing with activity. There was particular buzz as current EFC champion Jeremy The Pitbull Smith arrived to show his support for the drive. Being from the area Jeremy was keen to show his support and a big thank-you goes out to him!
The blankets kept piling up until the bakkies were over-flowing! The support for the drive was outstanding and after the final count was in we had 609 blankets donated, far exceeding our expectations and goal to fill both Chevrolet UTE-Force bakkies with blankets. We will be documenting the blanket handover to the worthy charities soon, so stay tuned!
The blankets were donated to the SPCA as well as Ukwakha Isiswe
Who do we have to thank?
The event was hosted at Caffiain, a local coffee shop in the Kensington (Johannesburg) area. They provided free coffee to everyone at the event as well as keeping their kitchen open and having waiters taking orders. The atmosphere was great and there was a strong community vibe at the event.
Chevrolet South Africa got on-board in a big way through their UTE-Force division. They provided 2 Chevrolet Corsa Utility bakkies for us to use on the night to collect the blankets and to have them delivered to the charities. They also donated R10 000 worth of blankets to the drive. A massive thank-you goes out to Chevrolet South Africa for their incredible support.
Lastly thank you to everyone who attended the drive and donated a blanket or 2, without your support the event could not have happened.
