Although the G65-series BMW X5 is scheduled to arrive in South Africa only in “early 2027”, the German firm has quietly added the new X5 40d xDrive derivative to its local configurator.
At the time of the 5th-generation X5’s reveal in late June 2026, BMW Group South Africa said 3 versions would be available “from market introduction” towards the start of 2027: the X5 xDrive40d xDrive, the X5 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) and the fully electric BMW iX5 60 xDrive.
However, we’ve already spotted the oil-burning derivative on the local configurator (though there’s no sign yet of the EV and PHEV). According to BMW Group SA’s website, the new X5 40d xDrive will be priced from R1 948 936.
Specifying the optional M Sport package, meanwhile, will add R60 000, taking the price to R2 008 936. For the record, the outgoing G05-series X5 xDrive30d starts at R1 814 637, meaning the entry point to diesel-powered X5 ownership will effectively increase some R134 299.
The new X5 xDrive40d xDrive employs a 3.0-litre straight-6 turbodiesel motor generating 210 kW and 650 Nm, outputs that match those of the outgoing (and likewise mild-hybrid-equipped) xDrive30d. Still, total system outputs are listed as 230 kW and 670 Nm, seemingly boosted by the 48V system.
As expected, the X5 xDrive40d xDrive ships standard with an 8-speed automatic transmission. BMW Group SA claims a combined fuel consumption of 6.7 L/100 km, while the listed 0-100 kph time comes in at 6.1 seconds.
The list of standard equipment includes features like adaptive LED headlamps, a panoramic sunroof, a powered tailgate, powered front seats (with heating), a heated steering wheel, a 3D head-up display and a full suite of advanced driver-assistance system (ADAS) function.
Optional extras include various alloy-wheel designs (up to 23-inch items listed for R61 000), the M Sport Pro package (R100 000), the Seat Comfort package (R40 000), the Deluxe Package (R95 000) and the Pioneer Package (R115 000).
With a listed length of 4 994 mm, the new BMW X5 is some 59 mm longer than the outgoing G05-series model. Despite riding on an updated version of the same platform, the new model’s wheelbase has also grown, increasing from 2 975 mm to 3 035 mm.
The new X5’s front end is defined by its vertically aligned (and illuminated) kidney grille along with new “double-X” light icons. Inside, you’ll find the latest “BMW Panoramic iDrive” display and the “BMW Panoramic Vision”, with the latter’s projection surface extending across the width of the windscreen base.
