About Jeep
Unlike most other automobile manufacturers, Jeeps credits its origins to the American military. The first Jeep was the Bantam BRC and was built by American Bantam for the US army. The US army then commissioned 135 companies to build them a 4x4 light recognizance vehicle. The American Bantam Company and Willys-Overland were the only two companies to take up the challenge. Bantam then delivered a vehicle design to the army and the design was given to Willys and Ford to mass produce the vehicle. The first Jeep’s built were the Model MB from Willys and the Model GPW from Ford. Following the war, Jeeps became available to the public in the surplus market and their popularity increased even further.
